Facebook Chat: Yet Another Way to Stalk Your Friends
This morning when I pulled up Facebook to start my day I noticed a new icon at the bottom right corner of my browser window. Behold, Facebook chat officially launched. I had read about it for a few weeks now over at TechCrunch but never really gave it much thought. I figured that I needed another chat program like I needed a hole in my head. I have two AIM accounts, neither of which I have really used since college. With the proliferation of text messaging, instant messaging seems so 2001. Though, since it was sitting there so harmlessly at the bottom of the page, I figured I’d give it a shot.
I have to say, Facebook Chat is actually kind of cool. It’s an easy way to instantly contact people you know (or may not know) regardless of computer set-up, program used, etc. You can “pop” the window out of the browser so that you can use Facebook Chat independantly of having the Facebook site open on your browser, but for the most part it’s a pretty easy way to see who’s online and send them a message. It’s not as effective as a text message or an email, or Facebook message or wall post for that matter, but it’s a good, simple tool to use should it be needed.
One interesting thing about it, if you turn it on and forget about it, you’ll “sign on” every time you pull up your Facebook page. So if you’re privacy conscious or just don’t want people to know that you actually spend every waking moment on Facebook, you might want to “go offline” and leave Facebook chat alone.
In full disclosure, I can be found on Facebook and occasionally on Facebook Chat — if you’re lucky.
