Clothing You Can Plant

Some friends and I are going skiing in Park City at the end of the year and today we went shopping for off-season ski gear. We went to Travel Country where some very nice people helped us out and some solid deals were had. The most interesting purchase of the day was a thermal shirt by a company called Icebreaker. It’s your typical thermal shirt that is warm as any I’ve worn, but it’s made using a special merino wool from sheep in New Zealand. The shirt is actually 100% pure merino wool which means, according to the company, that when I’m done with it I can plant it in my backyard as it’s completely biodegradable. Because it naturally deters moisture they also claim it deters stink and requires little or no care. In fact, they claim that the longest continual daily use by one of their products is 196 days. Now I’m pretty sure I’m not going to wear this thing for 196 straight days, but for some reason it’s rather comforting to know that I can wear something for half a year, not have it stink nor need washing, and be able to plant it afterwards. As far as “green clothing” goes I’ve got to say this is a pretty cool idea.
