Sweet, tasty, nerd art

January 13, 2007 | Justin

Ok, so I didn’t like the Lord of the Rings as a trilogy (I’m of course talking about the movies because I have never picked up a 1000+ page book, let alone read it — well except for Die Bible, which is The Bible in German) but there were some parts that I did particularly enjoy — and no it had nothing to do with hot elves. I enjoyed the vicious battles in the second installment, The Two Towers. Part of it, I guess, has to do with the whole “everyone is going to fight until the end” but then part of it has to do with the promise being kept and good conquering evil thing going down. So, naturally when I read this Digg headline I was intrigued to click: “Scale model of the battle of Helm’s Deep made completely out of candy.” What was waiting on the other side was a pretty impressive feat of craftsmanship and, well, nerdiness — if that’s not a word I declare it one now.

Helm's DeepSo check this out, this guy and his family plus his girlfriend (I imagine he threw that nugget in there just to show he has one) spent their Christmas break reconstructing the Helm’s Deep battle in a way only a diabetic could love. They used Gummy Bears for the bad guys and Sour Patch Kids for the good guys/good elves/whatever.

While the craftsmanship is top notch, normally something of this magnitude wouldn’t merit a mention here on the hallowed pages that are Mindless Chatter but this guy, whoever he is, gets extra points for the captions he included with his pictures. With lines like

Here you can see how skilled we are at cardboard mountain creation. Seeing this again almost makes me aroused at my own awesomeness.

This shot is dramatic in that last scene from Saving Private Ryan everyone is getting shot and dying sort of way. You’re terrified, but you feel for the characters, even though they are only sugar.

he has earned my respect.  Has he earned yours?

This is really inspiring, and also looking at more of the close-up photos.
