I like to pull heists…

November 20, 2006 | Justin

Dark ManOk, kind of. So there is this new game or gimmick or brilliant marketing ploy going on in the Mac community right now called MacHeist. Basically it’s this elaborate deal where each week (sort of) a new heist is pulled. If you successfully pull off the heist then you get a password and get some free stuff. At the end of the five week deal, the vault will be blown and a “totally mysterious software bundle” will be available at a “steal.” The contents of the vault are a mystery, but so far I have completed the first two heists and received eight pieces of software (listed below) and two bundle discounts (I assume the discounts will be coupons for the “totally mysterious software bundle.” All total I’ve received $124.80 in “loot.”

The process is actually enjoyable. The first heist required me to gain the trust of a confidential “Apple employee” and acquire his credentials to a “employees only” website where secret files were obtained, and submitted to MacRumors of course. The current heist had me searching GPS coordinates and inflating origami balloons.

MacHeist is the brainchild of Phill Ryu who also recently produced the My Dream App contest where software ideas were voted on by Mac enthusiasts and the winning there received production contracts.

If this sounds interesting to you, MacHeist went public today so just pull up the site and register. Enjoy.
