Henry Gale and the Map

March 30, 2006 | Justin

Lost is by far the coolest show on television. It seems like last week something new is discovered and last night, man they dropped a few big ones on us.

They started off pretty slow. We learned that Jack is quite the Texas Hold ‘em player. He pretty much kills Swayer’s ego by winning all of his fruit, and then all the hatch’s medicine back. Jack explains he learned how to player poker in Thailand. I guess it explains his tattoo, but Thailand? Ok, that’ll probably be his next flashback. Or not.

Speaking of flashbacks, Locke’s father found another way to screw him, this time out of the love of his life. Pretty rough father. First a kidney, now this. I still would like to know how he lost his ability to walk.

The biggest revelations of the evening are centered around the “lockdown” of the hatch that seems like coincided with a supply drop. Yeah, I said supply drop. The Dharma people are still around… somewhere. The experiment theory seems to be more valid today. But yeah, during the lockdown, Locke counts on Henry Gale to crawl through the ducts and type in the numbers. While he’s doing that, Locke is witness to a map of, well, it looks like the island.

Lost MapThis map, written on one of the blast doors in ink only viewable under black light, shows all the various “hatches” as well as a large region in the center of the island (connecting all the hatches?) marked with a large “?”. Around the outside of the octagon containing the hatches are various scribblings in Latin and English. The numbers are there, some acronyms, and other odd things. Brian, over at Lost… and Gone Forever, translated the Latin. There are some interesting quotes:

Nil actum reputa si quid superest agendum = Don’t consider that anything has been done if anything is left to be done
Aegrescit medendo = The disease worsens with the treatment. The remedy is worse than the disease
Sursum corda = Lift up your hearts
Malum consilium quod mutari non potest = It’s a bad plan that can’t be changed
Cogito ergo doleo = I think therefore I am depressed
Credo nos in fluctu eodem esse = I think we’re on the same wavelength
Ut sit magna, tamen certe lenta ira deorum est = The wrath of the gods may be great, but it certainly is slow
Liberate te ex inferis = Save yourself from hell
Hic sunt dracones = Here be dragons
Mus uni non fidit antro = A mouse does not rely on just one hole

Yeah, here be dragons. Only time will tell.

The other rather large bit of information released is that Henry Gale’s story checked out. Well, until Syid dug up the grave and discovered that the man buried there had a Henry Gale drivers license. Yeah, our “Henry Gale” really is an ‘other.’ Next week I’ll sit back and watch Syid get his vengeance. Perhaps a few more answers first. Should be good. Though, considering the real Henry Gale was burried under the balloon, who buried him? I read a comment on Lost… and Gone Forever that said they were 99% sure that Desmond (remember the guy that initially lived in the hatch?) said he arrived on a balloon. I don’t remember myself but if that’s true, well we know how Desmond got there. Where is he now? I have no clue.

Did I mention this was the best show on television?
